EXPERIENCE FLORES
WAEREBO
Waerebo traditional village (1,100m above sea level) located in the secluded area of Manggarai is a cultural heritage of Flores. The 8-9 hour car journey from Labuan Bajo plus 3 hours on foot makes this village more unique and interesting to visit for tourists. The Waerebo people preserve and at the same time live in typical Manggarai cone-shaped houses, called Mbaru Niang. The architecture of Niang’s house is a typical Manggarai ethnic architecture that you cannot find in any hemisphere, except in the Manggarai region, Flores; and the Waerebo traditional village is the only native village that preserves its architecture and customs. Waerebo is also one of the best coffee producers in Flores; so the aroma of coffee will greet you anywhere. The seven houses that have been reconstructed have also received the UNESCO Asia Pacific Award for Cultural Heritage. The Waerebo people also carry out traditional ceremonies, including the traditional Penti ceremony which marks the beginning of the growing season and the new year for the Waerebo community. This is a rare opportunity to observe a variety of arts and processions that are not often done, such as chants, dances, and sacred songs that are only performed during this ceremony.
